Maternity wear

You’re pregnant! Congratulations! So what now……….. Whether you’ve just discovered the great news or entering your third trimester, if you are a fashionista, a natural reaction is to worry about how you look. The good news is there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Maternity wear designers are constantly producing new styles and capsular outfits to whet the appetites of newly pregnant mums to be. There’s no need to feel fat and frumpy these days, maternity wear has come along way in the past decade. New styles are based on all the new high street fashions. And there are no boundaries! Pregnant ladies are wearing jump suits, animal prints, combat trousers, and so on.

There are a few simple rules to follow however. Don’t opt for buying non maternity clothes in a bigger size. You will look shapeless, on the top, your tops will hang off your shoulders and on the bottom half, skirts and trousers will be baggy and sag at the rear, and you will be hiding all those lovely new curves. This is also a very expensive way of updating your wardrobe, as you will need to buy everything in a bigger size each month to accommodate your growing bump. Do show off your magnificent new cleavage!

There are lots of different styles which will draw attention to your amazing new asset, for example tops knotted at the centre of the bust line and well cut V and scoop tops. Don’t compromise on style. Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to lose your identity. Take your natural non maternity look and update to suit your changing shape. Accessorising is key, so you can still wear those fabulous killer heels or sparkly ballet pumps together with your favourite handbag and designer sunglasses.

Don’t forget to treat yourself (at least once a month) with a little pampering session such as a massage, or facial or trip to the hairdresser. My personal favourite was a monthly visit to my local beauty therapist for a luxury pedicure – bliss, especially when I could no longer see my feet to be bothered trying to paint my toenails!

Fabric is crucial. Good maternity wear is made using soft stretchy fabric such as jersey or a jersey type fabric made from a combination of viscose, lyocell and elastane. Not only does this fabric drape beautifully over your gorgeous curves and bump, stretches easily for a flattering fitted look, but it feels fabulous against your skin. An added bonus is that it washes like a ribbon and doesn’t crease much when you’re travelling.

It is daunting to know what to buy when you are pregnant. You want to look great on every occasion but equally you don’t want to pay the earth for a replacement wardrobe. The rules here are to keep it simple. Choose your key pieces in colours that will go with anything, black, white, nudes. Find good jeans which are not only the right style for you but also have the comfort factor. A lovely fitted stretch or wrap dress which can be worn on its own or over leggings is a great look. A pair of black trousers (or two) is essential. Get the right style for you, over, under or on the bump. Then simply ring the changes with different style tops to create new looks. Tops with detail in the right place are best. Ruching and ties on the side are extremely flattering as are wrap tops with layers of fabric to create your own effects.

Above all wear your bump with pride. This is your chance to look and feel amazing. Enjoy it! Show your bump off, the bigger the better, and put a smile on the face of everyone you meet.
